Recognising and Treating Pig Diseases
Author(s): Michael R Muirhead and Thomas JL AlexanderThis pocket guide has been written as a companion to Managing Pig Health and the Treatment of Disease. The book, which has over 300 pages provides quick and easy reference to identifying and treating pig diseases.
The book is split into four sections, the first provides a basic understanding of medicines and their usage, to compliment the treatment information within the two main sections of the book which cover diseases in the breeding and sucking herd and diseases in the weaner, grower and finishing herd. The fourth section explains how to manage and treat the sick pig.
At the front of the main disease sections there are exhaustive observations and causes tables to help the reader identify what the disease problem may be. These tables provide a long list of clinical signs that may be seen in the pig(s) each with a list of possible causes. Further reading is then provided on the most likely diseases. Each disease is briefly explained, followed by a list of the the symptoms associated with it. A list of causes/contributing factors associated with the disease are given followed by an explanation how to a diagnosis is made. A list of specific treatments then follows, including appropriate drugs and dosage levels where appropriate.
The book is cross referenced with Managing Pig Health... for further reading, including all the relevant information on prevention and control.
